How to adopt

Our process exists to match each animal with the right home — not to make it hard. Most adoptions are finalised within two weeks.

1. Apply online

   Fill in our adoption form — it takes about five minutes. We ask about your home, yard, other pets and experience. No judgement, just matching.

2. Phone chat

   A volunteer calls you to talk through the animal you're interested in, answer questions and check any concerns. Honest conversations save heartbreak later.

3. Meet & greet

   You meet the animal at the foster home. Bring the whole household — kids, dogs, everyone. If it's a match, great. If not, we'll suggest another.

4. Home check

   A quick visit to make sure the yard is fenced (for dogs) and the environment is safe. We're looking for secure, not perfect.

5. Bring them home

   Pay the adoption fee, sign the adoption agreement and take your new family member home. We provide a settling-in guide and two weeks of foster-carer support.

Foster with us

We are a foster-based rescue — we have no shelter. Every animal lives in a volunteer's home until adoption. Fostering is how we save lives, and we always need more homes.

We provide food, vet care, bedding and supplies. You provide the spare room, the patience and the love. Foster periods range from two weeks to three months depending on the animal.

Currently needed: foster homes for large dogs in the Whangārei, Kamo and Tikipunga area, and kitten nurseries (bottle-feeding experience helpful) anywhere in Northland. Email foster@pawsandclawsrescue.org.nz to get started.

Surrender a pet

If you can no longer care for your pet, we'd rather you contact us than abandon them. We take surrendered cats, dogs and rabbits when we have foster space — and we never judge.

Call 09 438 0000 or email adopt@pawsandclawsrescue.org.nz with a photo, age, temperament notes and the reason for surrender. We'll get back to you within 48 hours.
